Understanding your dog's recall difficulty levels
List 3 EASY recalls (comes back 9/10 times) your dog can currently do. eg in the house, in the garden, quiet park no distractions.

List 3 MEDIUM level recalls (come back 5/10 times) eg recall from twigs, interesting smells, puddles.

List 3 HARD level recalls (comes back 1/10 times) eg recall from other dogs, birds, picnics, squirrels.

How can you achieve recall from even the hardest distractions? Start with easy distractions to achieve lots of success so it becomes reflex, then gradually move through the difficulty levels.

To be able to get really reliable recall we need to make sure the reward is extra special. What are your dog's top 3 favourite foods? eg wet dog food, hotdogs, roast chicken

Recall Top Tips
A long line can be used to help with recall and setting them up for success. It helps to prevent them practicing ignoring your recall cue while you are still working through the difficulty levels.

If you need to get your dog back but you don't think they will respond to your recall cue, the best option is to use something else so not to undo your recall training. "what's this" and food under the nose and hold onto the harness to guide them away from the distraction.

What can you do if your dog doesn't respond to your recall cue? Gently reel them in with the long line away from whatever is distracting them.
