Planning the perfect getaway
Planning a trip with your dog is incredibly exciting! But a little extra prep work can make the difference between a good holiday and a truly great one. To help you get ready, I’ve put together my top 10 tips for a safe, fun, and stress-free UK break with your four-legged friend.
-
Pack for comfort
Don’t forget their bed, food, bowls, lead, poop bags, and favourite toys. A familiar blanket or bed can be a huge comfort and help your dog settle quickly in a new place.
-
Be prepared for bumps and puddles
Pack a basic first-aid kit with bandages and antiseptic wipes. A towel is also a must-have for drying off after rainy walks or beach days, and dog-friendly wipes are great for quick clean-ups before you get back in the car.
-
Plan for a safe and comfy journey
Ensure your dog is secure in the car, ideally in a well-ventilated crate where they can move comfortably. Plan for regular stops (every 2 hours is a good rule of thumb) for leg stretches and toilet breaks.
-
Know your local vets
Before you go, do a quick search for the nearest vet to your holiday accommodation and save their number in your phone. Also, double-check that your dog’s microchip details are up to date, just in case.
-
Practice your pub & café skills
If you plan on visiting dog-friendly pubs or cafes, practice a “settle” on a mat in a local pub garden here in Epsom before you go. A well-practiced ‘settle’ makes a pub lunch relaxing for everyone!
-
Be a positive ambassador
Always clean up after your dog and respect local rules, keeping them on a lead where required. Check for any area-specific restrictions, especially on beaches during peak season.
-
Mind the weather
The UK weather can be unpredictable! On hot days, don’t walk your dog during the hottest parts of the day, and never, ever leave them in a car—even for a minute.
-
Don’t overdo the adventure
It can be tempting to go on long, exciting hikes, but try to stick to your dog’s normal exercise routine to avoid exhaustion or sprains. If they’re not used to big adventures, take plenty of breaks and bring fresh water.

Brush up on your training before you go
A little training beforehand can make your holiday so much more relaxing.
-
Sharpen your “leave it”
A reliable “leave it” is a holiday lifesaver! It will help prevent your dog from picking up unwanted items like dropped ice cream cones, seaweed on the beach, or other tempting but potentially harmful things.
-
Polish your recall
A new environment with exciting sights and smells can be very distracting. Reinforce your dog’s recall with fun games before you go to ensure they come back reliably, even when off-lead.
