Self control. Using their nose. part of off lead reliability. Building a bond.

With practice this will help you achieve:

Stronger relationship. Off lead reliability. Settled calmer dog. Enrichment needs met.

What you'll need

  • Your dog’s collar
  • Their favourite toy
  • A safe space such as a garden or a room in the home

Step-by-step

Hold the Collar:
Start by gently holding your dog’s collar, then toss the toy a short distance away. Give the cue “Find it!” to send them off. When they reach the toy, have a quick game or tug session if that’s something they enjoy — it makes the reward even more fun!

Sit and Wait:
Add a challenge by asking your dog to sit and wait while you place the toy. Release them with the “Find it” cue once the toy is set. This helps build patience and impulse control.

Harder Searches:
Take it up a notch by hiding the toy in trickier spots — behind furniture, under a blanket, or in another room. These tougher searches engage their natural scenting skills and help tire them out both mentally and physically.

Top tips for success

  • Start Easy:
Don’t make it too hard too soon — set your dog up for easy wins to build their confidence and keep them motivated to search.
  • Use What They Love:
If your dog is food-motivated, try hiding a food toy like a Kong or clam for them to find. The extra scent makes the game even more rewarding!
  • Build Up Gradually:
Begin indoors, where it’s quieter and easier for them to focus. Once they’re confident, take the game outside on walks for an extra challenge. If you’re still working on recall, use a long line to keep things safe and controlled.
