Handling is a vital skill for every dog, ensuring they are comfortable with being handled, checked over and groomed. Using treats to help build a positive and stress-free experience for your dog, add this into part of your daily routine.

With practice this will help you achieve:

  • Day to day care
  • Wiping paws
  • Checking them over after a walk
  • At the vet or the groomers

What you'll need

  • High-value treats (small, soft, and easy for your dog to eat quickly)
  • Your dog
  • A quiet, low-distraction space

Step-by-step

  1. Treat and touch: (Simultaneous): Start with some tasty treats. Give your dog a treat and at the exact same time, gently touch their ear for a second.  Repeat this with every body part.
  2. Touch, Then Treat: Next, hold onto your ear first, then immediately give them a treat while you are still holding their ear. Release the ear after they’ve had the treat. Repeat this with every body part.
  3. Practice Without Immediate Treat: Work up to holding their ear even when a treat isn’t immediately visible, but always ensure a treat is given shortly after, making it a “good deal” for your dog. Repeat this with every body part.

Top tips for success

  • Keep your movements gentle and predictable. Avoid sudden grabbing, which can be startling.
  • If your dog shows any discomfort, slow down and make it easier. Go back to the previous step where they were comfortable.
  • The goal is to teach your dog that a hand near them always means good things happen!
  • You can “name” each body part as you go, this eventually help your dog to predict whats coming.
  • Practice frequently in short low pressure sessions to build up their comfort and confidence over time.
  • For tricky areas, try using a licki mat, snuffle mat or squeezy cheese.
