    Engagement, Thinking in Arousal

This game teaches the foundational skills for a bomb-proof recall, making sure your dog chooses to come back to you every single time. By making being close to you super rewarding and fun, you’ll create a fantastic habit where your dog learns that coming back to you is the absolute best thing ever, no matter what exciting distractions are around!

With practice this will help you achieve:

  • Calling your dog back at the park
  • Keeping them safe near roads
  • For stress-free off-lead walks

What you'll need

  • High-Value Rewards (something super special like cheese, frankfurters, or even liver paste in a squeezy tube!)
  • A quiet, low-distraction space (start at home or in the garden for best results)
  • A long line (for practicing safely outdoors when you move beyond the garden)

Step-by-step

  1. Find the perfect reward: First up, let’s figure out what makes your dog go wild! Experiment with different treats and toys to find that extra special reward they don’t get all the time. This is your recall secret weapon!
  2. Start close and make it fun: First decide on a recall cue such as like a special sound or word, e.g, their name followed by “here” or “pup pup pup”. Begin indoors where there are no distractions. With your dog near, use your recall cue in a happy tone and immediately start moving backwards. This encourages them to happily hunt you down!
  3. Reward!: The moment your dog catches up to you, reward them with loads of enthusiasm and that super special treat! You want them to think, “Wow, chasing after mum/dad gets me the best stuff!”
  4. Practice in new places: Once your dog is totally smashing it indoors, take the game to a new, slightly more exciting spot, like the garden or a quiet corner of the park. Keep it easy and fun!
  5. Long line for safety: When you’re in an unenclosed area, use a long line for practice. If your dog gets a bit distracted, you can gently guide them back to you, and don’t forget to give them a big reward the instant they turn towards you, even if you had to use the line to guide them in!

Top tips for success

  • Your recall reward must be genuinely exciting for your dog.
  • Moving backwards when you call them is a powerful way to encourage your dog to chase you.
  • Start in an easy environment with minimal distractions to set your dog up for success.
  • Never use your recall cue for something your dog might find unpleasant.
  • If you have anything to reward your dog with….use a different cue such as “whats this”.
