This awesome game teaches your dog the “drop it” cue, which is a total game-changer for safe play and easy retrieves! It’s all about building some great self-control and clear communication, so your dog happily lets go of toys or other objects when you ask. This makes playtime way more fun and helps you manage those moments when they grab something they shouldn’t!
With practice this will help you achieve:
- Having a fun and safe game of tug
- Getting the ball back at the park
- When they pick up something naughty!
What you'll need
- Your dog’s absolute favourite toy
- Some super tasty treats (small, soft, and yummy!)
Step-by-step
- Get the game started: Let’s play! Grab their toy and start a fun game of tug or fetch. Let them get excited and really into it!
- Say “drop” and show the treat: While your pup is happily playing, say “Drop” in a friendly but clear voice and put a delicious treat right under their nose.
- Reward the drop: The second they let go of the toy to get the treat, say “Yes!” and give them that treat.
- Practice makes perfect: Let’s do it again! Once they’ve got the hang of it, you can ask for the drop and wait for them to let go before bringing the treat to them.
Top tips for success
- Make sure your treats are way more exciting than the toy they have in their mouth!
- Good timing with your “Yes!” marker the moment they let go, let’s them know they got it right and the reward is coming.
- Avoid physically pulling the toy from their mouth, this can just make it more difficult for them to let go and adds to the game of tug. Instead make the toy really still and boring.
