The Catch Up Game is the first step to creating a dog that absolutely loves to hanging out close to you! It’s fantastic for building super reliable off-lead skills. By rewarding check ins and making staying near you the most fun, your dog will naturally choose to stick by your side, even with distractions!
With practice this will help you achieve:
- Reliable off-lead walks
- Regular check ins and eye contact
- Loose-lead walking in public
- Dog chooses to stay near you
What you'll need
- Super yummy high-value treats (think cheese, cooked chicken, or pate!)
- A long line (fantastic for safety during off-lead practice in bigger spaces)
- Plenty of space to move around (a garden or quiet park is perfect)
Step-by-step
- Start the fun: Begin with your dog on their long line and place a treat on the floor under their nose, say “get it” and start walking away.
- Reward for catching up: As your dog catches up to you, happily reward them with another treat.
- Change direction: Repeat and keep moving! Change direction frequently to encourage your dog to notice where you are and stay attentive and follow your movements. Every time they catch up with you, mark it with a “Yes!” and a reward.
- Make it their choice: The goal is for your dog to choose to stay close to you, not because you’re calling them, but because it’s super rewarding and fun. Try not to prompt them too much; let them make the decision to hang out.
- Use a long line for safety: If you’re practicing in a bigger, unenclosed space, use a long line as a safety net. This gives them a little more freedom than a short lead but allows you to gently guide them back if they wander too far.
Top tips for success
- Your rewards need to be genuinely exciting to make staying close the best deal ever!
- Change direction often to keep your dog engaged and watching you.
- Aim for “auto check-ins” where your dog naturally looks towards you and stays near without you asking.
- Take this game out and about, gradually increasing distraction levels in the environment.
