As a parent and a trainer, I know how important a safe and happy home is. This guide gives you simple, positive rules to teach your children how to interact respectfully with dogs, building a foundation of friendship and trust.
With practice this will help you achieve:
- Keeping both dogs and children safe.
- Harmonious family household.
- Preventing bites and accidents.
What you'll need
- My Kids & Dogs Fun Pack (colouring in petting guide, kids checklist)
- Baby gates or a puppy pen for management
- A positive and patient attitude!
Step-by-step
- Supervise or separate, always: This is the golden rule. Never leave your child and dog alone together. If you can’t be actively supervising, use a baby gate or pen to create a safe, separate space. Management is the key to preventing accidents. Most dog bites to children happen when adults are not in the room.
- Teach gentle petting: Show your children how to pet dogs respectfully. Use a flat hand for gentle strokes on their side or chest. Teach them to avoid hugging or grabbing.
- Give your dog a safe space: Your dog’s crate or bed is their sanctuary. Teach your children that this space is off-limits when the dog is resting there. Everyone deserves a place where they can have some quiet time.
- Teach kids never to approach a dog that is eating or sleeping.
- Become a “dog detective”: Teach your kids to spot the signs that a dog is uncomfortable, like yawning, lip licking, turning their head away or trying to move away. This empowers them to know when to give the dog space.
- Teach your dog a solid “leave” cue: This is so useful, so they don’t eat the crayons or pick up or run off with your kids toys!
