Collar handling is a vital skill for every dog, ensuring they are comfortable with being held and guided by their collar. This game builds confidence around touch, making everyday necessities like vet visits, grooming, and simply grabbing their collar for safety, a positive and stress-free experience for both you and your dog.

With practice this will help you achieve:

  • Grabbing them quickly for safety
  • Attaching their lead for a walk
  • At the vet or the groomers

What you'll need

  • High-value treats (small, soft, and easy for your dog to eat quickly)
  • Your dog (wearing a comfortable collar)
  • A quiet, low-distraction space

Step-by-step

  1. Treat and Hold: (Simultaneous): Start with some tasty treats. Give your dog a treat and at the exact same time, gently hold onto their collar for a second. Release the collar as they finish the treat. Repeat this several times.
  2. Hold Collar, Then Treat: Next, hold onto your dog’s collar first, then immediately give them a treat while you are still holding the collar. Release the collar after they’ve had the treat.
  3. Practice Without Immediate Treat: Work up to holding the collar even when a treat isn’t immediately visible, but always ensure a treat is given shortly after, making it a “good deal” for your dog.

Top tips for success

  • Always pair collar touches and holds with high-value rewards to create a positive association.
  • Keep your movements gentle and predictable. Avoid sudden grabbing, which can be startling.
  • If your dog shows any discomfort, slow down and make it easier. Go back to the previous step where they were comfortable.
  • The goal is to teach your dog that a hand near or on their collar always means good things happen!
  • Practice frequently in short, fun bursts to build up their comfort and confidence over time.
