The “Proximity Bubble,” is a combination of games that teach your dog to absolutely love hanging out close to you for off-lead reliability! It builds a super strong connection and encourages them to naturally check in with you, even with exciting distractions around. Get ready for stress-free walks where your dog chooses to be by your side!
With practice this will help you achieve:
- Off-lead walks in open spaces
- Dog checks in frequently
- Safe and happy explorations
What you'll need
- Plenty of super yummy high-value treats (like little bits of cheese or cooked chicken!)
- Treat bag
- A long line (essential for safe practice in bigger spaces)
- Your dog’s regular harness
Step-by-step
- Start with the long line: Put your dog on their long line, letting it trail loosely on the ground. This gives them a sense of freedom while keeping them safe.
- Encourage exploration, manage distance: Let your dog sniff and explore, but if they start to wander too far, gently step on the long line to subtly remind them of your presence. The line should be loose or trailing most of the time.
- Recalls and release: Every now and then, call your dog to you with a happy voice and reward them generously when they arrive. After a few treats, release them with a cheerful cue like “Okay!” so they know they can go explore again.
- Practice “Name Check”: Say your dog’s name. If they look towards you, immediately throw a treat for them to catch. There’s no need for them to come all the way back to you; this builds value for just checking in from a distance.
- “This way”: Start with the Catch Up game. Once your dog understands the game, begin adding the cue “This way” each time you change direction.
- Use a mix of cues and games: To keep your dog engaged within your “proximity bubble,” use a combination of fun games and cues.
Top tips for success
- Keep the long line loose and trailing; only step on it if your dog goes too far.
- Make recalls super rewarding with enthusiastic praise and high-value treats.
- Use “Name Check” to encourage your dog to look at you from a distance without always demanding a full recall.
- Build the game up gradually, starting in quiet areas and slowly adding more distractions.
